One person was killed Monday after a vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train in Copiah County, according to the Copiah County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred near Hazlehurst when Amtrak Train 58, traveling from New Orleans to Chicago, struck a vehicle that was obstructing the railroad tracks, according to a statement from Amtrak.

Sheriff's officials said the driver of the vehicle died at the scene. The victim's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Amtrak said none of the approximately 180 passengers or crew members aboard the train were injured.

The passenger train remained at the scene while authorities investigated the collision. Amtrak said it is cooperating with local law enforcement as the investigation continues.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, railroad crossing incidents are the second-leading cause of rail-related deaths in the United States. Amtrak said it continues to partner with Operation Lifesaver to promote rail safety and encourage drivers and pedestrians to obey warning devices and never stop on railroad tracks.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.
