The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has opened an inquiry into an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 6 p.m. in Crystal Springs, not far from South Jackson Street. The incident stemmed from a joint operation led by agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, who were working in the area as part of an ongoing effort to address suspected illegal activity.
According to early information, agents approached several individuals believed to be involved in criminal behavior. As they attempted to make contact, a passenger stepped out of a vehicle and immediately fled on foot. Agents pursued the individual for a short distance. During the chase, the subject presented what appeared to be a weapon, prompting one of the agents to fire.
The individual was struck and later taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities report that the injuries are not life-threatening. No agents were physically injured during the incident, and officials have not released the identity of the subject at this time.
MBI investigators are now working to document the scene, interview those involved, and collect all available evidence. This review will include verifying the sequence of events, examining the actions of both the agents and the subject, and determining whether protocol was followed. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for further evaluation.
Officials caution that the details released so far are preliminary and may change as the investigation progresses. Additional information is expected to be shared when it becomes available.
