One Killed, Two Injured in I-55 Crash in Copiah County

One person was killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 55 in Copiah County, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:39 p.m. July 29 near mile marker 70.
Authorities said a 2018 Kenworth dump truck was traveling south on Interstate 55 when it crossed the median into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox.
The driver of the dump truck, 26-year-old Lataria Wilson of Crystal Springs, was transported by private vehicle to Copiah Medical Center. The extent of Wilson's injuries was not immediately available.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, 81-year-old Josephine Cowart of Tickfaw, Louisiana, was transported by ambulance to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Her condition has not been released.
A passenger in the Equinox, 82-year-old Sidney Cowart Jr., also of Tickfaw, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
