Wesson Cobras look to remain unbeaten at Franklin County

The Wesson Cobras will put their unbeaten start to the 2026 season on the line Friday night when they travel to Meadville to take on the Franklin County Bulldogs in a non-district matchup.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Franklin County High School.

Wesson enters the contest at 2-0 after a dominant opening-night performance against Bogue Chitto and a strong follow-up victory over North Pike.

The Cobras opened the season Aug. 28 with a 41-0 road shutout of Bogue Chitto. Wesson then returned home Sept. 4 and defeated North Pike 29-14 at Stone Stadium on the Copiah-Lincoln Community College campus.

Through two games, Wesson has outscored its opponents 70-14, putting together a balanced start that has seen the Cobras score at least 29 points in each game while holding both opponents to 14 points or fewer.

Friday's opponent is looking to turn its season around.

Franklin County enters the matchup at 0-2. The Bulldogs opened the season with a narrow 17-12 loss at North Pike before falling 42-6 to Brookhaven on Sept. 4. Franklin County has scored 18 points through its first two games while allowing 59.

The Bulldogs are beginning the season under new leadership. Jamario Winters is in his first season as Franklin County's head coach. Franklin County competes in Class 3A Region 7.

Despite the different starts to the season, Wesson will not be able to overlook the Bulldogs. The two programs have a long history, having met 12 times since 2004, with the series tied at 6-6 entering Friday's game.

Wesson head coach Jeremy Loy is in his 11th season leading the Cobras. The team is looking to build on the momentum of last year's successful campaign and position itself for another playoff run.

Friday's contest is the third of five consecutive non-district games to open Wesson's schedule. After Franklin County, the Cobras will travel to Lumberton on Sept. 18 before returning home Sept. 25 to face Lawrence County.

District play begins Oct. 2 when Wesson hosts Enterprise. The Cobras will then travel to Loyd Star on Oct. 9 before closing the listed district portion of the schedule at home against Amite County on Oct. 16.

For Wesson, Friday's game provides another opportunity to keep its perfect record intact, continue its strong offensive start and build confidence before district competition begins.

The Cobras and Bulldogs will meet under the Friday night lights in Meadville with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
