Members of the Wesson American Legion Auxiliary Unit #79 and Socks for
Heroes recently hosted a booth at the annual Brookhaven Exchange Club Fair to educate the community.
Ladies manned the speedball booth at the annual fair on July 31. The organization felt this was an excellent storytelling, community-service opportunity to make more people aware of the work done and the work needed.
The auxiliary passed out poppies that this was an excellent storytelling and community-service opportunity to raise awareness about the work done and the work still to explain its mission of supporting veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.
The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.
Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. The American Legion Family brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day. The community is encouraged to wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform.
“I want to thank our two unit members, Cathy and Sharon, for participating in this event. It’s near and dear to my heart. My husband was retired from the Air Force. The work these two do daily astounds me. People like these two are what makes our auxiliary and our unit great. It’s what makes communities that much better,” said Kim Whittington, unit president.
