Recalling the Biblical story of David and Goliath in which David, as a young shepherd boy, defeated the mighty Philistine warrior with nothing more than a sling and five smooth stones, Stanley Martin – Wesson’s newly elected Alderman-at-Large – called on members of Wesson Chamber of Commerce to use their own smooth stones to face challenges confronting the town.
Martin was guest speaker at the June Chamber luncheon at the Venue at Porches.
Involvement in town affairs and standing up for what is right isn’t unlike challenging Goliath, Martin suggested in recommending five smooth stones for realizing a vision for Wesson:
Partnership with other people and organizations that will work with you.
Investing money, time and energy in the town and its organizations.
Community encouragement to gain strength and give strength to others.
Faith that God is in your life to help.
A song of Lazarus – He Called My Name – on your heart.
At the meeting, Chamber President Teri Bath also addressed:
Chamber membership and leadership. She is seeking volunteers to chair a committee tasked with recruiting new members and a nominating committee for new officers.
Consolidation of local school districts. Although local leadership in the state legislature killed a bill that would have created a single Copiah County school district, consolidation of school districts throughout the state remains an ongoing issue with appointment of a study group by the Governor, Bath noted.
Tariffs, a contentious issue throughout the nation particularly among businesses. She said tariffs were among the nation’s first taxes and used to address smuggling during Colonial time. They generate revenues and have been effective in protecting growing businesses from foreign competition, she added.
