Garden Club receives four awards
Wesson Garden Club has received four prestigious awards for its projects and programs.
Mississippi Department of Transportation recognized the club's work around roadsides in presenting it the 2019 Transportation Commissioner’s Mississippi Roadside Award -- a beautiful silver bowl given to an organization that has promoted the planning and/or planting of an effective and outstanding roadside improvement project along a highway median and/or roadside in an approach to a town or community. Good landscape design and maintenance to ensure permanent beauty, with highway safety in mind are major considerations in selecting award recipients
The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., also presented three awards to the local organization:
• A second place “Youth Special Service” award which recognizes a club that contributes the most outstanding service in the promotion of gardening and conservation among youth. The Wesson Garden Club established a Youth Garden Club called “The Butterbeans” in September 2019 to cultivate the love of gardening among students, and teaching and exposing them to garden therapy, conservation, horticulture, nature study and an anti-litter program.
• A third place “Garden Therapy Program" award that recognizes a club for sponsoring an outstanding garden therapy program in which physically challenged or learning disabled and/or shut-ins receive noteworthy benefit. The Wesson Garden Club partnered with Boswell Regional Center in Wesson to design and sponsor a garden therapy program for its residents.
• A "Publicity Press Book” honorable mention award presented to a club for its book of press clippings, demonstrating publicity it has generated throughout the year.
At its monthly meeting, Marilyn Britt, Yard of the Month Chair, proposed a new Club Holiday Award to recognize local gardeners like its Yard of the Month awards.
The Wesson Garden Club is a member of The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
